The Richmond
Invitational is one of the longest running tournaments
in Virginia. It is a 32
man double elimination invitational tournament with team
points deciding the top teams. It has consistently drawn
excellent competition from the best teams in Virginia and
out-of-state. Teams represent all levels: AAA, AA, & Independent
schools!
The tournament dates back to 1978, when it was first
called the Marshall Walker Classic directed by Lou Timok.
It expanded over the years from a small 8-team tournament
to the current 32 man format. The name was changed in
1980 to the Richmond Invitational, when they changed
sites to the Arthur Ashe Center in the City of Richmond.
After a few years, it moved to Hermitage High School
under the direction of Tim Donahue and it remains there
today. It has the distinction of being one of the largest
and toughest tournaments, certainly in the Richmond area
and in the state of Virginia. It draws quality wrestlers
from A, AA, AAA and Independent schools and many of those
who compete in it each year do well on the regional and
state level. Lately we have entries from out of state
teams such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.
We are proud of our history and all of the athletes,
coaches, and fans have a great wrestling experience.
